Etymology

"Saraswati Vihar" literally means "Saraswati's Vihar or Dwelling"; Saraswati being considered as the goddess of the arts and learning. The land here was allotted to Government School teachers in the 1970s and they built their houses. In the last decade, many affluent people have settled in the locality, due to the large plot sizes, lush green parks and easy accessibility of the colony. Real estate prices have sky-rocketed over the years.

History

The initial development started in year 1978 when various allottees took loan at cheaper rates from government and started construction. The location before 1978 resembled a jungle. By 1982, a healthy percentage of residents started settling in. During those days, there was scarcity of water and people used to get water from the nearby Rani Bagh market.

Overview

Saraswati Vihar has 1085 houses ranging from 1,500 sq ft (139 m2) to 3,600 sq ft (330 m2). These 1000 houses have been divided into five blocks from A to E. Each block has a dedicated and well maintained lush green park. A green belt spanning over 1.5 Km goes through Saraswati Vihar. The colony has a dedicated Electricity Supply facility situated in Block D, a Bus Station situated in Block E, and a Police Station in Block A. Interestingly, Thana Saraswati Vihar that covers more than 10 different colonies is located in a nearby resettlement colony Shakur Pur and not in Saraswati Vihar.

Saraswati Vihar is a self-sufficient colony with Library, Dispensary, Post Office, Banks, Mother Dairy Booths, Saral MRI (One of the largest Diagnostic Centres in Delhi), play schools and a number of Doctors. Saraswati Vihar has two government schools for children up to senior secondary level and one government MCD school for children in primary level. This locality also boasts of Four Temples (One in A Block, one in B Block, two in C block), three markets (one each in A Block, C Block, & D block) with shops catering to almost all the daily needs along with broad open roads, good maintenance & an engaging & proactive welfare society.

The best part about living in this locality is a clean and green environment, lots of open spaces & lots of learned people to intermingle with. One can go to the Green Belt in the morning and watch endless stream of people from nearby areas come and do yoga, walking, brisk walking to jogging and other forms of exercise.

The locality is opening its arms to new residents as more and more of the original allottees are now selling off their properties to builders or collaborating with them in exchange for newly built floors and fat cheques, as the real estate prices have soared. The place is now 50% inhabited by business class.

Accessibility

The colony falls adjacent to the outer ring road, spanning from Deepali Chowk to Madhuban Chowk with Rohini on the other side. It is catered by the Pitampura and Kohat Enclave Metro Stations of the Red Line of Delhi Metro.
